Mobily is the official brand name of Etihad Etisalat, the second mobile service provider in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2005, Mobily paid SAR 12.21 billion for its GSM license and paid a subsequent SAR 753.75 million for its 3G license. Etisalat owns 27.4 per cent of Mobily's share, the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI) owns 11.2 percent, while Saudi private investors and the public own the remainder of shares.

Launched in 32 cities, Mobily brought coverage to 79.2 per cent of the population, attracted the first million subscribers in less than 90 days as well as launched high volume mobile data bundles in May 2007. With over 420 interconnection agreements using its five international gateways and 70,000 international circuits, Mobily links its subscribers to every country on the planet that has GSM-based mobile services.

After Mobily won the license in the summer of 2004, the company raised SAR 8.8125 billion (US$ 2.35 billion) in capital, the largest syndicated Islamic loan at the time.

As 2007 dawned, Mobily set a new record when the company raised a subsequent SAR 10.781 billion (US$ 2.875 billion) in Islamic financing.

Mobily has the largest High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network in the region covering more than 92 per cent of the populated areas with 587 regions, cities and areas inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's geographical expanse of 2.149 million square kilometres and covers 16 cities with WiMAX service. It has the largest active HSPA base in the Middle East and North Africa region with 2.3 million active subscribers and is also the first operator in the region to deploy HSPA+.

Owning 66 per cent of Saudi National Fibre Optic Network (SNFN), it links the segments of its high-quality mobile radio network with a seven-ring 12,000 km fibre optic backbone covering the whole country. Mobily was the first Saudi operator to launch the BlackBerry platform to businesses at the end of 2006, to bring BlackBerry Internet Service to the masses in mid-2007 and to launch Apple iPhone 3G in February, 2009.

Etisalat Lanka (Tigo Sri Lanka) is Sri Lanka's first cellular network. The company inaugurated its operations in 1989, then called Celltel. In 2009 Etisalat acquired a 100% stake in Tigo Sri Lanka, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nasdaq and OMX listed Millicom International Cellular S.A and rebranded the company to Etisalat Sri Lanka in 2010.

Etisalat Lanka is the second-largest mobile phone operator in Sri Lanka with over 3.3 million subscribers. The company has built it success on acquiring a license to offer 3G in addition to the 2G services provided to the company earlier. Etisalat already has existing investments in Asia including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Indian markets which are among the fastest growing in the telecommunications sector to date. Etisalat intends to expand its current network in Sri Lanka, with a coverage expansion resulting in a total of over 480 2G sites and over 500 3G sites this year.

By offering innovative and high quality services, Canar has steadily increased its customer base in the fixed telecom market to enjoy 61.5% overall market share in fixedline in Sudan. It grew its customer base by over 50% in 2007 and further growth is expected. Canar services cover the main cities in Sudan, with a coverage increase of 122% compared to 2006. Canar's fibre optic backbone extends to 3.070 km nationally and 850 locally in the major cities to serve mobile operators, ISPs and corporate and business clients across the country. To further expand its services, Canar has launched Sudan Landing station in May 2007 to provide international connectivity linked with 122,000 km of submarine cables, making Sudan, East Africa's Internet gateway to the entire world.

During 2009, fibre optic links between Sudan and Ethiopia were rolled out as part of overall plans to expand the Canar fibre network across all neighbouring countries. This will maximise use of the Canar submarine landing station, which is an integral part of the Canar Wholesale offer in international connectivity for the region.

In 2004, Atlantic Telecom launched its innovative West African brand - MOOV, with the objective of revolutionising the mobile telephony market in Africa. Today, MOOV is pushing the limits of mobile telephony in each of the countries in which it operates, across a community which totals in excess of 50 million people. These include the Ivory Coast since July 2006; Benin, Gabon and Togo since December 2007; and Niger and Central Africa since January 2008.

In 2005, Etisalat acquired shares in PTCL, Pakistan's most reliable and largest converged services carrier providing all telecommunications services from basic voice telephony to data, Internet, video-conferencing and carrier services to consumers and businesses all over the country. The company has over 20 million mobile subscribers under the name "Ufone" and more than 5 million fixedline customers.

As the fastest growing service provider among all high-speed service providers, PTCL's broadband subscriber base crossed 450,000 landmarks over 500 cities of Pakistan. Ufone has network coverage in 10,000 locations and across all major highways of Pakistan and provides international roaming to more than 260 live operators in over 150 countries. PTCL is a leader in providing infrastructure to other telecom operators and corporate customers in Pakistan. PTCL is committed to improvement, growth and quality service as is evidenced by the modernisation of local loop services from copper to an optical network, the acquisition of supplementary capacity on the two SEA-ME-WE and IMEWE intercontinental cabling route to expand its international capacity in an effort to meet the increasing demand of international traffic. Etisalat DB Telecom India Pvt. Ltd., one of the latest entrants in the burgeoning Indian mobile service industry is a joint venture between Etisalat and DB Group. Etisalat DB has the Unified Services Access License in 15 circles, enabling them to provide an expansive range of services covering a population of over 900 million across these circles. The company offers Internet telephony, Internet services and broadband services, which include national and international long distance telephony solutions, full range of prepaid and postpaid products, national and international roaming and value-added services.

Excelcomindo (XL) is the fastest growing mobile service provider in Indonesia which started its commercial operation in 1996. It offers prepaid and postpaid subscribers and corporate customers, voice, data and value- added services with extensive coverage throughout Indonesia. Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services (EMTS), trading as Etisalat Nigeria, is a Nigerian company duly incorporated under the laws of Nigeria in partnership with Mubadala Development Company and Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates. Incorporated in Nigeria as a private company, it acquired the Unified Access License from the Federal Government of Nigeria in January 2007.

Etisalat Nigeria began commercial operations on 23 October 2008 in 7 cities and now has network in all 36 states of the federation and the FCT covering major cities and towns with ongoing densification to ensure qualitative service delivery in all areas that it has presence. Showing exponential growth, in just two years of commercial operations, it has over 6 million active subscribers and recently acquired a 3G licence which will be rolled out in 2011.
