Mobily is the official brand name of Etihad Etisalat, the second mobile service provider in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2005, Mobily paid SAR 12.21 billion for its GSM license and paid a subsequent SAR 753.75 million for its 3G license. Etisalat owns 27.4 per cent of Mobily's share, the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI) owns 11.2 percent, while Saudi private investors and the public own the remainder of shares.
Launched in 32 cities, Mobily brought coverage to 79.2 per cent of the population, attracted the first million subscribers in less than 90 days as well as launched high volume mobile data bundles in May 2007. With over 420 interconnection agreements using its five international gateways and 70,000 international circuits, Mobily links its subscribers to every country on the planet that has GSM-based mobile services.
After Mobily won the license in the summer of 2004, the company raised SAR 8.8125 billion (US$ 2.35 billion) in capital, the largest syndicated Islamic loan at the time.
As 2007 dawned, Mobily set a new record when the company raised a subsequent SAR 10.781 billion (US$ 2.875 billion) in Islamic financing.
Mobily has the largest High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network in the region covering more than 92 per cent of the populated areas with 587 regions, cities and areas inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's geographical expanse of 2.149 million square kilometres and covers 16 cities with WiMAX service. It has the largest active HSPA base in the Middle East and North Africa region with 2.3 million active subscribers and is also the first operator in the region to deploy HSPA+.
Owning 66 per cent of Saudi National Fibre Optic Network (SNFN), it links the segments of its high-quality mobile radio network with a seven-ring 12,000 km fibre optic backbone covering the whole country. Mobily was the first Saudi operator to launch the BlackBerry platform to businesses at the end of 2006, to bring BlackBerry Internet Service to the masses in mid-2007 and to launch Apple iPhone 3G in February, 2009.
